On May 3, 2003 the Orlando Sentinel reported that "construction is set to begin this month on a 13,000-square-foot Vedic temple that will fulfill a decades-old dream of Central Florida's Hindu community. When completed in about two years, the temple will be the only one of its kind in Central Florida and the dominant feature on Lake Drive... It has been in the planning stages since the Hindu Society of Greater Orlando organized in 1982. Five years later, when the group changed its name to the Hindu Society of Central Florida, it made construction of a temple its main mission."
