About 100 Hindu protesters on Sunday shouted for separation of church and state in India outside the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont.

Organizers said they wanted to send a strong message to Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, chief minister of the southern state of Andhra Pradesh, India, who was attending a reception at the convention center.

V.P. Prakash Rao, of Jackson, Miss., said he came to protest a 60-year-old government endowment act that uses money from Hindu temples to pay for Islam and Christianity. The money should go to other religions, too, and not enough is returned to Hindus, he said.
