A Hindu group whose plans for a massive temple and development stirred controversy in East Windsor two years ago has set its sights on a 100-acre parcel in Robbinsville.

BAPS, a nonprofit Hindu organization, is seeking final approval for four of its five buildings at a Robbinsville planning board meeting Wednesday.

It is seeking preliminary but not final approval for the fifth building because it would be built in India and shipped, said Dipal Patel, a project manager for BAPS.

The Robbinsville proposal, the Hindu American Religious Center, is different from the one presented to East Windsor a couple of years ago. The 244,000-square-foot proposal off Route 130 on North Main Street in Robbinsville is strictly for a house of worship.

The failed 152,000-square-foot project in East Windsor had "more of a cultural aspect to it" that included a library, a separate medical hall and a convention center, Patel said.

Patel said the East Windsor location had been ideal because it was right off Interchange 8 on the New Jersey Turnpike. The Robbinsville locale is four miles from the original proposed site, Patel said.
