On June 24, 2003 The Standard-Times reported that "the crime was a violent attack on a peaceful man, said Dr. Madhu Jhaveri, the adviser to the Indian Students Association at UMass Dartmouth. Mr. Bhalerao came from Indore, India, and was president of the association for 18 months starting in 2001... During his tenure, Dr. Jhaveri said, Mr. Bhalerao frequently drove to Logan Airport in Boston to welcome students arriving from his native country... 'He's an extremely soft guy. He would go out of his way to help the people,' Dr. Jhaveri said... A Hindu, Mr. Bhalerao worshipped every day and marked his forehead with a red dot of ashes, an uncommon custom in Dartmouth."
