A Hindu chaplain gave the opening prayer in the Indiana Senate in what is believed to be a first for the chamber.

Rajan (RA-zhan) Zed of Reno, Nev., read Hindu scripture passages Thursday, reciting them in Sanskrit and then English as senators stood with heads bowed. The passages urged lawmakers to do work with the welfare of others in mind.
