Son of late Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muham-madu Maccido and Senator representing Sokoto Central Senatorial District , Alhaji Ahmed Muhammadu Maccido, has called on religious clerics in the state to shun unguarded statements capable of inciting violence and threatening the peaceful co-existence among members of various sects in the state.

Maccido, who spoke to THISDAY in a telephone interview, expressed dismay over the recent assassination of a prominent muslim cleric, Malam Umar Hamza Dan -Maishiya.

"What leads to hatred and acrimony between religious sects is mostly verbal attack against one's understanding by clerics which to a large extent generates into physical attack on the lives and properties of the faithful," he said.

He appealed to the people, particularly the Ulamas to desist from casting aspersions on one another in the course of preaching. He added that mutual understanding and living on the age-long culture of harmonious coexistence was neccessary to ensure stability in the polity.
