Since Israel is the world's largest recipient of direct U.S. economic and military aid every year, since aid to Palestine is only about 1/20 of that provided to Israel, and since Hamas receives no U.S. aid at all, it is clear to me that the U.S. needs to use it's leverage with Israel to insist on a different course in this madness of retribution. Do we really think a military solution is possible? Do we really think the current attack, yes massacre, will do anything but make prospects for peace more distant and difficult? When I hear Tsipi Livni speak of the need for "peace and quiet" in southern Israel as the immediate impetus for the attack, when I hear her dismiss questions of "proportionality" as having been superceded by the need to defeat Hamas, once and for all, I feel that she and other Israeli leaders have simply lost touch with historical reality.
