Airport bosses last night defended their decision to prevent two Muslim women from boarding a flight for refusing to undergo a full body scan.
The women, who are the first in the UK to receive such a ban, had been selected at random to pass through a recently-introduced £80,000 X-ray machine.
The controversial device displays a “naked” image of a passenger allowing security staff to identify hidden weapons and explosives.
But one of the women objected on religious grounds and the other for medical reasons.
The pair were then turned back from the gate at Manchester Airport, forfeiting their £400 air fares to Islamabad in Pakistan.
