On December 30, 2004 the Daily Breeze reported, "decapitated chickens, a dead bird and a headless cat with some of its legs cut off have been found at Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro, leading authorities to believe the animals were killed in some kind of winter solstice ritual. A rash of similar ritualistic animal killings swept through San Pedro parks in the early 1990s, though police and parks officials say there does not seem to be any upswing in such activity recently. Lifeguards discovered the grisly scene at Cabrillo on Friday and have no leads on who might have killed the animals. One regular beachgoer who saw the dead animals said three chickens, their legs wired together, were placed inside a circle of seaweed while a gray cat was laid out on an elevated rock nearby. The bird was lying outside the circle. Some of the animals also appeared to have been disemboweled, she said."
