First Bishop of Asian Ancestry in the United States

On December 14, 2002 The San Francisco Chronicle reported that "a San Francisco priest who said he once scolded his aunt for praying for him to become a bishop was named Friday as the first bishop of Asian ancestry in the United States.... Monsignor Ignatius Wang, 68, a former pastor in North Beach who was born in Beijing, was elevated to the post of auxiliary bishop and will serve under Archbishop William Levada... Maurice Healy, a spokesman for the diocese, said 25 percent of the diocese's 450,000 members are of Asian descent."
