On September 29, 2005 United Press International reported, "A New York judge has ruled top government officials such as former Attorney General John Ashcroft must testify in a Muslim discrimination lawsuit. Judge John Gleeson, of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York ruled Ashcroft, the director of the FBI and other senior government officials must testify under oath in the lawsuit that alleges they conspired to violate the rights of Muslim immigrants in Brooklyn after the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. The New York Times said the officials had sought to have the lawsuit dismissed, arguing they had governmental immunity and that the Sept. 11 attacks created 'special factors' outweighing the plaintiffs' right to sue for damages... The lawsuit charges that because of their race, religion or national origin, the two men were physically abused and deprived of due process while being detained for more than eight months in a maximum-security unit."
