On August 1, 2003 India Abroad reported that "the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Chicago chapter took a pro-active step to end bias against the Sikh community, when Thomas Knier, Special Agent in charge of the FBI's Chicago District unit, visited the gurdwara at Palatine, about 15 miles from downtown Chicago... Knier, who had gone to the gurdwara at the invitation of the Sikh Religious Society of Chicago, wore a yellow patka, the traditional Sikh turban, during his three-hour visit. He joined community members for the community meal, the langar."
