Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan, who promised to speak at the Faith Community of St. Sabina Church on the South Side before undergoing surgery earlier this year, fulfilled that pledge Friday evening before a thunderous crowd of several hundred.

In contrast to his previous, often divisive messages, Farrakhan struck an inclusive chord Friday, encouraging Muslims, Christians and Jews alike to seek the kingdom of God as a unified force.

"The kingdom of God is within you," Farrakhan said. "Those are powerful words. You're looking everywhere for the kingdom except where you should look. If the kingdom of God is within you, that means us, all of us."

Last year, after learning of his failing health, Farrakhan turned over leadership of the Nation of Islam to an executive board in September. Farrakhan, who suffered complications from cancer treatment and underwent a 12-hour abdominal surgery in January, gave a farewell speech thought to be his final public address in February.

But several hundred people showed up at the church Friday to hear him speak again. The fact that Farrakhan is "healed and well and strong" is a sign of God's faithfulness, said the Rev. Michael Pfleger, the pastor of Saint Sabina.
