Temecula Islamic Center’s Imam Mahmoud Harmoush, Temecula Dance Company owner and director Lani Morel and Temecula father and volunteer Richard “Dick” Thompson were presented the Family First Award at a banquet in their honor on Thursday, January 25, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The award, according to Temecula Stake Public Affairs Director Lanae Turley-Trejo, is given to recognize community leaders who have made outstanding contributions to the family.

Imam Mahmoud Harmoush has built his congregation to about 200 families and is currently working on a new building in Temecula. Farouk Abdullah introduced the Imam, saying, “Community is one big family. If you work on the family, you have a better country and better neighborhoods.” On the Southwest County Interfaith Council, the Imam has worked to dispel myths and foregone conclusions, promoting living together in peace regardless of race or religion. The Imam completed the pilgrimage to Mecca last year.

Lani Morel has worked for decades in the Temecula community providing a place where girls and boys can develop their talents in a family-oriented, safe and positive atmosphere. She is the owner and director of Temecula Dance Company (TDC) and with her husband, Ed, ran The Club, a Temecula gym, for many years.

Lani has encouraged family involvement in all dance events. She and her family donate their time and talents to many service projects each year and invite participation from the dance families at the studio. At TDC, anyone who dances on a competition team must abide by a “code of conduct” that goes beyond the traditional no smoking or drinking policies, committing participants to use the Internet properly, be respectful of their parents and treat others with kindness.
