A lot has happened in the 400 years since Jamestown was founded, especially in the diversity of our country's religious communities.

The Hampton Citizens' Unity Commission decided to recognize that growth with a "Faith & Diversity Celebration." The free Friday evening gathering in Mill Point Park will lead off "Journey Up the James," a weekend of activities marking the city's involvement in Jamestown 2007.

Commission executive director John Johnson says 23 different faiths have agreed to participate in the event.

"It's been a real pleasure to see the faith communities come together," says Johnson. "People need to have more knowledge and more exposure to people of other races and religions."

The evening will begin with a re-enactment of a 17th-century Church of England evening service conducted by The Rev. James L. Hutton II that would have been used in Jamestown in 1607.
