On March 26, 2005 The Boston Globe reported, "If a picture is worth a thousand words, then the two quilts hanging near the main hall in the Boston Public Library are novels and the 60-odd human faces adorning them chapters in the city's spiritual narrative. The faces are self-portraits in fabric by Boston-area residents representing an array of faith backgrounds. Clara Wainwright, the artist who designed the quilts, kept interrupting herself during an interview as each portrait triggered recollections of the subject's story. There's the Jew-turned-Catholic who has depicted her face covered with black and red fabric, symbolizing her need to conceal her new faith from her family. There's the Muslim woman who, for religious reasons, would not do a complete self-portrait but agreed to depict herself with a scarf covering all but her eyes...The tapestries are products of a three-year project to make 50 quilts by April 2006, when they will be exhibited at various places, including the library and Boston City Hall. The goal, Wainwright said, is to show 'the diversity of people's spiritual paths at the beginning of the 21st century,' much as 'Triumph of Religion' -- John Singer Sargent's masterpiece murals at the library -- depicted the subject early in the last century.
