On January 8, 2000, The Buffalo News reported that the Muslim community in the Buffalo, New York area celebrated Eid al-Fitr on January 8th. Dr. Syed Sajid Husain, president of the Islamic Society of the Niagara Frontier, estimates that 70 to 80 percent of the nearly 10,000 Muslims in Western New York strictly observe the Ramadan fast.
