The Elgin area always has been a treasure trove of religious experience, offering a rich tapestry of world's faiths all within a 15-mile radius. For those interested in exploring this diversity, an interfaith experience is available on a monthly basis.
The Elgin Interfaith Council meets the first Monday evening of the month at Elgin's Gail Borden Public Library. The group, established in 2003, first met at the Elgin Township Offices on McLean Boulevard.
It came about as the result of conversations Elginite Monica Hendrich had with representatives from the Chicago-based Council for a Parliament of the World's Religions. Early membership was drawn from a list of those who attended the Parliament's 1993 international event, held in Chicago in 1993.
Upcoming events for this international group include the 2007 Universal Forum of Cultures, in Monterrey, Mexico, and the 2009 Parliament of the World's Religions, with the potential site of either Delhi, India; Melbourne, Australia, or Singapore.
Diane Campbell, member of the Elgin Interfaith Council, commented, "There are not that many local groups like us. Our membership is predominantly laity, and we foster dialogue between members of many traditions. We are just here to learn."
A typical meeting draws anywhere from 15 to 30 attendees, along with a guest representative of a faith tradition who shares the essence of their faith, fostering an in-depth discussion. This promotes the purposes of the group, which underscores reverence for fellow beings, regardless of faith, culture, or appearance, and working toward peace.
