On December 17, 2001, The San Francisco Chronicle featured the article "A somber end to Ramadan." It reported, "The traditionally upbeat Eid al-Fitr prayer and three-day feast marking the end of Ramadan's monthlong daylight fast was decidedly more somber inside the basketball gym of El Rancho Verde Park in Hayward, where hundreds of Muslims gathered to pray." The article continued, "Muslims who gathered in Hayward said Ramadan was more subdued this year, as the community grieved lost lives in New York and Afghanistan and vandalism against mosques throughout the Bay Area. Just last week in Concord, someone heaved two large rocks through the window of the Islamic Center of Contra Costa while Muslims were praying. Three Ramadan ceremonies in the South Bay were heavily guarded by security officers."
