On October 7, 2000, The Plain Dealer (Cleveland) reported that "about 700 Arab-American demonstrators marched from the Federal Building to Public Square yesterday afternoon, chanting 'Stop the killing, stop the crime, our children are dying in Palestine.' As nine more Palestinians were killed by Israeli gunfire yesterday and a 10th died of previous injuries, the political positions of the Barak-Sharon coalition appeared intractable. And so did the feelings of the Muslim and Christian Arab communities in Cleveland. 'We're here to show unity and to tell the Israelis to not even think about using Jerusalem as their capital, because this will be a capital of the Palestinian state,' said Haider Alawan, an elder from the Islamic Center of Cleveland, which called for the protest after yesterday's prayers at area mosques...'Let the Jews weep and wail! Our land is not for sale,' the Cleveland demonstrators chanted at Public Square...On the outskirts of Public Square, Joel Ratner, regional director of the Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith, watched with discomfort as he spotted a sign equating the Jewish star with a swastika. 'That's anti-Semitic, but I know it doesn't speak for the whole crowd,' he said. 'Everyone condemns the killings and regrets the violence,' Ratner said as he watched. 'I'm hoping the two sides can disengage so we can have time for the two sides to cool ... Then the peace talks have to resume.'"
