On October 26, 1999, the Los Angeles Times published an article on the issue of race in church worship in Southern California. The author notes that while there has been a great ethnic influx in Southern California, it is rare to find churches that are multi-ethnic, where people from different races and cultures worship side by side. Dudley Rutherford, pastor of Shepherd of the Hills Christian Church in Northridge, CA, stated: "It's true what they say...that Sunday morning at 10 o'clock is still the most segregated hour in America." The church hosted a revival night on Wednesday, October 20th with music led by Andre Crouch, minister at Christ Memorial in Pacoima, CA and Grammy-Award winning musician. Crouch stated: "We like to say that God is color-blind and to pretend we church-folk are so enlightened, we don't even notice race...God does see color, but unlike us, He appreciates the differences, He savors the variety. He knows we're all brothers and sisters, all his children." The revival service attracted 1,800 people of many different races and several religions.
