On July 12, 2001 the Queens Chronicle-Central Edition reported that "everyone knows that Queens is famous for its diversity. You can see it on the streets, the subway platform and some of the shopping areas... But its cultural and social landscape is best demonstrated through a variety of events which draw record crowds every year throughout the borough... Today, downtown Flushing along Main Street is transformed into a major celebration of tradition and remembrance through the Lunar New Year Parade every February... During one of the Hindu holidays known as Holi in India, Richmond Hill is turned into a spectrum of pinks, purples and yellows during the Phagwah Parade down Liberty Avenue in March."
