On February 24, 2005 The New Straits Times reported, "A national conference to discuss the formation of an interfaith commission to identify values and ethical standards common to all religions began today. Culture, Arts and Heritage Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim said the proposed commission was one of several ideas being studied by the Government to ensure that religious matters were properly dealt with in the country...Earlier in his opening speech, Rais described the two-day conference as a milestone because it was not often that efforts were made to bring people of various religions together. The conference, mooted by the Bar Council in 2000, was attended by 231 participants, less than 50 of whom were Muslims."
