On May 8, 2004 The Express-Times reported, "Diana L. Eck, director of the Pluralism Project at Harvard University and one of the nation's highly regarded experts on the growing religious diversity of the United States, will address the graduating class and receive an honorary degree during Cedar Crest College's 134th Commencement Ceremony, according to a news release from the college... With constant news headlines chronicling both the ongoing struggle between Christians and Muslims in the Middle East and growing concerns about ways to handle the expanding religious diversity in America, including large Muslim and Hindu populations, Eck has been called on by the media and the government to bring clarity and focus to the conversation about these very complex, highly charged issues."
