On September 3, 2004 the Associated Press reported, "in a letter to Bush released yesterday, Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) and 10 others said action in the matter of Army Lt. Gen. William G. 'Jerry' Boykin is long overdue and he must be removed from his post as deputy undersecretary for defense. A Pentagon investigation concluded that Boykin violated regulations by failing to make it clear he was not speaking in an official capacity when he made nearly two dozen church speeches beginning in January 2002. It also found that Boykin, who made most of the speeches wearing his uniform, did not get prior clearance for the remarks."
