On June 7, 2004 the the Straits Times reported, "Hindu priests and Buddhist monks joined in religious prayer at the $2.25 million Arulmigu Velmurugan Gnanamuneeswarar Temple in Sengkang yesterday. The sculptural and ornamental works in the Hindu temple...got off to an auspicious start when MP Indranee Rajah (Tanjong Pagar GRC) placed the main sangus, or blessed conch shell, into a chest. Other devotees placed some 3,600 smaller sangus into two holes in the recently completed temple structure - in the Hindu equivalent of a building topping-out ceremony. This will be the first Hindu temple in the world to embed this many sangus at the pedestal of its two main sanctums. The Singapore Buddhist Lodge had donated $1.7 million to the temple to set up a learning centre within the complex, which will teach both Hinduism and Buddhism to showcase multiracial harmony in Singapore."
