On August 6, 2002 The Washington Post reported that in Silver Spring, Maryland, in the greater Washington DC metro area, "members of the Muslim Community Center are finalizing plans to open a free clinic within their bronze-domed mosque complex... The characteristics of the Muslim community in the Washington area are changing. Now Muslims from 10 to 20 countries attend prayers at the mosque" and many new immigrants do not immediately have health insurance. Doctors from within the mosque's membership will work with the clinic to offer "primary care to a limited number of uninsured, primarily Muslim patients a few hours per month... The Muslim clinic has been in the works for at least five years."
