On January 3, 2004 the Hindustan Times reported, "Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama on Saturday said people of India should maintain the country's glorious tradition of 'ahimsa' [nonviolence] for all-round development...The Dalai Lama said 'pluralism in religion is a reality and we must accept it. Some politicians may follow a different view but that is because of their ignorance'...The Dalai Lama asked people of India to be enlightened with the knowledge of different religious faiths. 'Knowledge brings conviction, conviction brings determination and determination brings familiarisation,' he said."
