On August 24, 2004 The San Francisco Chronicle reported, "the U.S. Supreme Court refused Monday to reconsider its ruling dismissing a Sacramento atheist's challenge to the phrase 'under God' in the Pledge of Allegiance. The court tossed Michael Newdow's case in June without ruling on whether the phrase violated the constitutional separation of church and state, as a federal appeals court had concluded two years ago. Newdow had argued that the daily recitation of the words 'under God' in his daughter's public school classroom is a government imposition of religion."
