A new college in Cambridge has launched a course designed to help Muslims integrate with British society.

The Cambridge Muslim College is running a year-long programme which has just taken on its first six students, all of whom have received an Islamic education and want to be imams or community leaders.

They will receive academic tuition as well as guidance on topics such as counselling drug abusers and managing mosques.

Dr Michael Berdine, director of the Grange Road-based centre, said the course aimed to expand the experience of the students so they can be better leaders and work more closely with the wider community.

He said: "We want to help them to broaden their community and make it part and parcel of the wider British community, and to understand British society better.
