On July 5, 2004 The South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported, "Since its founding a decade ago, the council, frequently referred to by its acronym CAIR, has pursued a mission of exposing injustice against American Muslims. Modeled in part on the Anti-Defamation League's civil rights efforts in the Jewish community, the group has been particularly busy since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks cast unprecedented suspicion on American Muslims. As it celebrates its 10th anniversary this week, CAIR is the most widely recognized group advocating for American Muslims. Yet questions about the CAIR national leadership's sympathies to militant Islam have long dogged the group, isolating it from other organizations that promote religious tolerance."
