On March 17, 2004 The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported, "A conference that begins at Gonzaga University on Thursday is intended to shape the content of a new academic discipline of hate studies, joining the likes of women's studies or black studies. Experts who are gathering here contend that even though hate has been a prime motivator in human history, no formal course for studying the phenomenon exists. 'An academic program is desperately needed to study why hatred has been a common human experience,' said Ken Stern of New York, an organizer and the American Jewish Committee's expert on anti-Semitism. 'Hatred is not a new problem and not exclusive to any region.' The conference is being sponsored by the Gonzaga Institute for Action Against Hate and will feature such groups as the Southern Poverty Law Center, the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, and various researchers and writers."
