People from around San Luis Obispo County representing numerous faiths filled the pews of a local church listening to passages from the Quran and singing hymns as part of Earth Day celebrations.

Residents of Islamic, Christian, Jewish and other faiths shared their beliefs on protecting the environment at the Congregational Church of San Luis Obispo on Sunday afternoon.

The San Luis Obispo Ministerial Association — made up of congregation leaders throughout the county —organized the event as a way for people of many faiths to share a common goal of promoting the conservation of energy and natural resources.

Association members said the idea of taking an interfaith approach to Earth Day sprouted from common religious beliefs regarding the environment.

“When you focus on one topic it’s easier to see the similarities between each religion,” said Nisha Abdul-Cader, a representative from The Islamic Society of the Central Coast.
