Christians, Jews Reach Out to Muslims After Mosque Fire in Springfield

On January 3, 2005 The Republican reported, "the Al-Baqi Islamic Center ended the year in flames, but yesterday a different fire burned for the mosque as some 50 people from all denominations showed support for the Muslims who lost their house of worship. The mosque was severely damaged by fire Dec. 8. Seven youths have been charged with arson. According to Rasul F. Seifullah, imam of the mosque, a report from the insurance company is expected by mid-month. Damage to the structure was estimated at $800,000. He expects the Islamic center to be in a permanent home again within two years. In the meantime, Muslims of the Islamic center have been invited to worship at area temples, churches and another mosque... The Rev. Cordella J. Brown, who immediately upon being asked opened her church for the special service, said, 'They are a community of faith. To be Muslim is to worship the same God as Christians and Jews.'"
