On May 24, 2003 The Beacon Journal reported that "more than 400 volunteers from Temple Israel and First Congregational Church of Akron will be planting seeds of kindness on June 1... The two congregations -- one Christian, the other Jewish -- will join forces to complete about 25 projects in the Akron [OH] area on what is called 'Mitzvah Day,' a time of caring and service. Mitzvah Day, which has been observed by Jewish congregations for about 15 years, gives congregants the chance to engage in community action... The observation by Temple Israel is unique because it is the congregation's first Mitzvah Day and because it is a partnership with a Christian congregation."
