On April 18, 2004 Newsday reported, "Barefoot and wearing colorful turbans, nearly 200 Sikhs gathered in a temple above a carpeting store on the Far North Side for Baisakhi Day, which celebrates the triumph over fear of death and the founding of the Khalsa Panth as an independent religion. Men and boys, and women and girls on opposite sides of the room sat cross-legged on white sheets listening as a minister read from the Guru, or book of Sikh scriptures... Christians have Easter, Jews have Passover and Sikhs have Baisakhi, said S.S. Shiva Singh Khalsa, a minister of Sikh Dharma."
