On March 11, 2004 The Pioneer Press reported, "Leaders of the Society of the Divine Word's Peace and Justice Commission were so impressed with the way Northbrook's Debra DePalma Youssef organized a diversity event at the Techny Towers last spring, they were inspired to create a special 'bridge building' award -- and give her the first one... Youssef became well-known in Northbrook in 2001, when she was a new member of the village's Community Relations Commission. The converted Muslim organized an interfaith walk during which residents visited various local houses of worship, including Northbrook's Islamic Cultural Center of Greater Chicago, at 1800 Pfingsten Road, where Youssef worships. That event was scheduled for Sept. 16, 2001, which turned out to be five days after the terrorist attacks on New York City and the Pentagon. And residents hailed the walk as a event that helped bring the community together after that trauma."
