On April 4, 2006 the Courier News reported, "They lined up at the door Sunday, their numbers stretching back outside under the stormy evening sky, and forward to the table stacked with 200 name tags. Beyond the registration table, more than 20 tables waited within the meeting hall of the synagogue, Congregation Kneseth Israel, on the city's near east side. This capacity crowd had turned out to attend The Journey Towards Home, an interfaith benefit for Public Action to Deliver Shelter [PADS] of Elgin. Sponsored by the Coalition of Elgin Religious Leaders, the evening — a year in the planning — centered around the celebration of a community seder, and most especially within that, the haggadah. A haggadah is a telling of the story of the Israelites and their exodus from bondage in Egypt some 3,500 years ago. This sense of story is central to the seder meal during the festival of Passover... It told of the journey from homelessness to home, of establishing a place for the homeless in the Elgin area, a permanent setting for PADS. And those who turned out for the event were a cross-section of community members from a host of backgrounds, organizations, and interests. Among those attending were Jews, Christians, Muslims and Baha'i."
