On September 21, 2006 CBS reported, "Cardinal Roger Mahony met Thursday with representatives from the Southland's Muslim community to discuss Pope Benedict XVI's recent remarks about Islam. The meeting took place Thursday morning at Mahony's office, and included representatives from the Islamic Shura Council of Southern California, Islamic Educational Center of Orange County, Muslim Public Affairs Council and Southern California Council on American Islamic Relations. 'It was positive, conciliatory and very constructive,' Salam Al-Marayati with the Muslim Public Affairs Council said. Mahony called the meeting Thursday a 'teachable moment' to increase dialogue between the Southland's Muslim and Catholic communities. During the meeting, the group discussed pairing parishes and mosques to promote interfaith understanding, a visit by Mahony to a local mosque and creating a Catholic-Muslim delegation to visit Muslim and Christian communities in the Middle East and Vatican City."
