Across Canada, December means a sensitive balancing of different cultural and religious traditions for many schools and teachers -- while for others, the run-up to Christmas looks much as it always has, filled with letters to Santa, Christmas ornament crafts and caroling sessions.

For schools in diverse neighbourhoods, there are two approaches to inclusiveness, says Richard Chambers, director of the University of Toronto's Multi-Faith Centre. One camp will celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and other holidays equally, while the other ignores all cultural or religious celebrations in favour of a generic winter festival.

"Both will argue that their way is the most inclusive," he says.
