KUALA LUMPUR: The United Nations is urged to set up an ombudsman-like structure to deal with complaints of intolerance and religious abuse.

Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad Pakistan director-general Dr Shireen Mazari proposed this at the Asia-Pacific Roundtable yesterday, saying the UN could implement the structure at the state and inter-state levels to sensitise the international community into tolerating those from different faiths.

"More attention needs to be paid to the idea of alliance building, focusing and understanding ‘the other’ at multiple levels: within states, among Muslim states, between Muslim states and the West."

Shireen was speaking at a plenary session on "Islam and the West dialogue: What achievements? What new effective measures?"

She said understanding and tolerance had to be deliberately asserted at all levels of society.
