On January 10, 2003 The San Diego Union-Tribune reported that "the [Escondido] City Council has approved a development agreement with a Hare Krishna group that allows the group to build four houses adjacent to an elaborate temple and cultural center to be built on 23 acres off Rincon Avenue... When the temple was first proposed, nearby residents cited concerns including traffic, access and the "mass and scale" of the cultural center, in addition to environmental issues.  The city's Design Review Board rejected the proposal, but both the Planning Commission and the City Council later approved it."
