On December 15, 2003 The Modest Bee reported that in advance of Tuesday's all-mail runoff election, mayoral candidate Bev Finley was the guest of honor at the Wat Cambodian Buddhist Society, where she was greeted by 50 Cambodian Buddhists. A speech to local worshippers was translated into Cambodian. "Finley's friendship with the southeast Asian community began in the early 1990s, before she retired as head of the Stanislaus County Health Services Agency. Khun, also a worker with the county Health Services Agency, remembers telling Finley that many Cambodians, Laotians and Vietnamese people were not obtaining proper health care because of language and cultural barriers. Finley responded by starting the Stanislaus Multi-Cultural Community Health Coalition, which brought health education to ethnic communities. Since then, the Cambodian community has considered her a friend, says Khun, who now does community outreach for the county health agency."
