On September 21, 2006 the Brandenton Herald reported, "The Council on American-Islamic Relations presented a check for $5,000 this afternoon to the Catholic Diocese of St. Petersburg as seed money for a campaign to fund the repair of churches damaged by violence in reaction to Pope Benedict's comments. Organizers of the American-Muslim grassroots campaign hope to take the effort worldwide. They said it is meant as a message that violent reaction against houses of worship is not acceptable."
