About 100 Buddhist monks marched last night in central Burma for the first time since the junta's deadly crackdown on anti-government protests a month ago.

The protest came as officials said UN envoy Ibrahim Gambari would arrive in Burma at the weekend for a second round of talks with the ruling generals amid international concern over September's violence.

The monks marched for about 30 minutes in the town of Pakokku, the scene of one of the worst confrontations with the military as street rallies escalated towards their bloody conclusion, leaving 13 people dead, according to the junta. The toll is believed to be much higher.
