A Muslim teenager initially denied employment at an Old Country Buffet restaurant in Fridley for wearing a headscarf has been hired by the company, a local advocacy group said Friday.
After explaining to a manager during an initial job interview that she wore the headscarf for religious reasons, Maryam Abdi, 16, was turned away. The manager told her to come back if she agreed not to wear the scarf on the job, Abdi said in an interview.
The Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations intervened, demanding an apology, sensitivity training for managers and a second interview for the girl.
