On April 10, 2005 Reuters reported, "Thousands of Thai Buddhists, Muslims and Christians attended nationwide religious rites on Sunday to pray for the thousands of people killed in the Dec 26. tsunami and 16 months of unrest in the country's restive south. The rites, a brainchild of Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, started at dawn in Bangkok with hundreds of Buddhists queued to give food to 108 orange-clad monks, an auspicious number, to mark the deaths.
Later, leaders of the Buddhist, Islamic, Christian, Hindu and Sikh faiths led prayers for peace and prosperity."
