On October 6, 2003 West Hawaii Today reported that Buddhist volunteers are coming to the aid of individuals in need. Five years ago, Elaine Sugai founded Project Dana, or "selfless giving" in Buddhist theology, at her temple. The group "helps 50 housebound or seriously ill elderly, not all of whom are Buddhist. " Project Dana is only one of the many religious organizations contributing to 211, the first inter-active emergency number in Hawaii to link people in need of urgent help with volunteers.
