On August 8, 2002 the Chicago Daily Herald reported that a "conflict within Elgin [Illinois'] sizeable Lao Buddhist community over the move and expansion of their temple is now... [moving] into court... Saysana 'Na' Songvilay, temple member and former three-term president of the Lao Association of Illinois, and two others successfully obtained a court order temporarily stopping Patrick Wu, the temple's president, from spending any large amounts of money on new temple-related projects...  Songvilay claims Wu bypassed the temple's procedures by initiating the purchase of 20 acres... without the board's approval... Wu said monks from throughout the United States who gathered in Elgin in June 2001 gave him the go-ahead to purchase the land... 'I'm disappointed and angry with the process,' said Songvilay, a financial adviser in Elgin. 'When you are running a non-profit, especially something like a Buddhist temple, you should follow the process. This has divided our community.'"
