On June 28, 2004 San Mateo County Times reported, "Though savory Japanese cuisine and carnival games were among the offerings drawing crowds to the San Mateo Buddhist Temple's annual bazaar this weekend, event organizers and participants contend it's the group camaraderie that keeps them coming year after year. Flags beckoned Sunday to passersby on South Claremont Street, inviting one and all to the annual fund-raiser, which Temple officials say attracted a couple of thousand people over the event's two-day run. Nearly all 350 members of the Temple volunteered to work the game booths and spoon out the food, but the highly anticipated event was more than just an inside gathering of Temple members, said congregation member Michi Mukai. Hailed by several visitors as a great way to foster good community relations, it attracted fans of Japanese cuisine as well as members of affiliate Buddhist temples from San Jose and Palo Alto."
